When the Intel® Entry Storage System SS4200-E configured for DHCP and no default IP address is set, the SS4200-E will provide a 169.254.X.X IP address.
An IP address in this range is part of the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIA) range. This is most often used in a Microsoft Windows* domain when no DHCP server is present, or has failed.
If client and storage system were set to DHCP and no DHCP server was present, the systems would be able to communicate by virtue of APIA and being on the same IP subnet.
